German Fire Departments in larger cities consist of both professional an voluntary fire fighters. Both are equipped similar an together form one Fire Department. The North Company is the largest voluntary unit in Aachen. Our members cover a wide variety of jobs – workers, technicians, employees, civil servants, students, trainees or teachers, there rarely is a field that is not covered by us. Each of us is equipped with a digital pager an can be called 24 hours a day, if our assistance at an incident is needed. In the case of an alarm call, the first of our engines will be on the way to the scene 5 to 10 minutes after the alarm with a personnel of at least 6 fire fighters. Mostly, we are called in for

Technical assistance of a larger extent is normally not covered by us, since the special equipment e. g. for hazardous materials or heavy traffic accidents is operated by the professional companies. Nevertheless, we will also respond to such calls after a certain alarm level is exceeded.

At night and during the weekend, we respond to every fire call of standard alarm level – this does not include single engine responses to minor fires. During the daytime, we only respond to higher alarm levels. In 2000, the Nort Co has received exactly 100 calls.
